Unfortunately, our bodies undergo all kinds of stress. Emotional stress is what most of us think about when we think ‘stress’—stress from work, relationships, finances, unresolved past traumas, or just feeling like we aren’t good enough or aren’t doing enough. We also undergo physical stress when, for example, our bodies are fighting off an infection or reacting to a food allergy or intolerance. We also experience physical stress when we exercise and train too hard without the appropriate amount of rest and recovery.
With all the toxins in our environment, we also have chemical stressors that overload our liver. These include air pollution, xenoestrogens, antibiotics or other prescribed medications, and certain treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. A diet high in carbs, simple sugars, and caffeine can also stress the body and trigger cortisol release. Other gut issues, such as irregular bowel movements, leaky gut syndrome, or IBS can also cause dietary stress. Lastly, we can feel spiritual stress whenever we feel lost in life or like we have no purpose or direction.
